WMC Scholarship winners 2014On Saturday, May 10, 2014, the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg held its annual scholarship auditions at the Eva Clare Hall, at the University of Manitoba. The day was filled with many commendable performances from young Manitoba artists! The WMC congratulates the following winners:

  • WMC Scholarship $3,000 – ZANDER HOWARD-SCOTT – Cello
  • WMC Scholarship $2,500 – MEGAN DUFRAT – Piano
  • Madeline Gauvin Scholarship $2,000 – LAURELLE FROESE – Mezzo-Soprano
  • Holtby Scholarship – $1,500 – EDVANNY SILVA – Cello
  • Berythe Birse Scholarship – $1000 – THOMAS ROBERTS – Violin

The WMC scholarship program has been a feature of the Women’s Musical Club mandate since 1915. Hundreds of young musicians have won these scholarships over the years, and many have gone on to achieve international acclaim. The names of the winners and the amounts of the awards are listed in a brochure which is updated yearly.

The five winners will perform and receive their scholarship cheques at the annual WMC Scholarship Winners’ Recital that will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, December 28th, 2014, at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The public is invited to attend and be treated to an afternoon of amazing music from these talented Manitoban performers! Tickets are available through McNally Robinson Booksellers in December, through a subscription, or at the door (by cheque or cash only). Students $5 at the door only.

Zander Howard-Scott, Cellist, is halfway through the Bachelor of Music program in Cello Performance at McGill University, where he holds a full scholarship. A former student of Yuri Hooker, Zander now studies with world-renowned soloist Matt Haimovitz. Zander is very grateful for the WMC’s generous support of aspiring young artists.
Megan Dufrat, Pianist, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at the University of Manitoba, Desautels Faculty of Music under the tutelage of David Moroz. In August 2014, Megan will be a featured Young Artist at the Tuckamore Chamber Music Festival.
Laurelle Froese, Mezzo-Soprano, has completed her Masters in Vocal and Operatic Performance at the University of Toronto. She begins her professional debut the spring of 2014 in Saskatoon Opera’s Die Zauberflöte as Second Lady, and will join Vancouver Opera’s Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist Program for the 2014-2015 season. She has been named a 2013 & 2014 Jeune Ambassadeurs Lyrique Laureate.
Edvanny Silva, Cellist, has completed her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance at the University of Manitoba, Desautels Faculty of Music in 2014, under Dr. Minna Rose Chung. She has received many bursaries and awards throughout her undergraduate studies and was invited to play with the YOA – the Orchestra of the Americas.
Thomas Roberts, Violinist, completed his Bachelors of Music (Performance) program at the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba in 2014 under the private tutelage of Dr. Oleg Pokhanovski and chamber music coaching of Dr. Minna Rose Chung. He will be auditioning for several post-graduate programs in Australia in the fall of 2014.
