About the WMC of Winnipeg
Originally founded in 1894, the WMC
- Provides a stage for young artists in a five-concert series (In 2020/2021 – there are only 2 concerts due to Covid-19)
- Provides annual scholarships to young Manitoba musicians (since 1915)
- Since 2006, administers the biennial WMC McLellan Competition for Solo Performance with Orchestra
The Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg, formed in 1894, is the oldest continuously operating musical organization in Winnipeg, and continues its long tradition of providing a stage for some of the talented young Canadian artists about to embark on an international career.
Our stage has been graced in the past by such stars as Amelita Galli-Curci (1920), Zara Nelsova (1945), Teresa Stratas (1963) and Anton Kuerti (1979) to name but a few. More recently we have recognized the talent of Jasper Wood, Susan Platts, Naida Cole and Denise Djokic. And we look forward to continuing the search for more of these Canadian treasures, and giving a Winnipeg audience the opportunity to experience their talent.
WMC also provides scholarships to promising young Manitoba musicians, a tradition first introduced in 1915. Our long list of scholarship winners includes such names as Keri-Lynn Wilson, Tracy Dahl and Valdine Anderson, all of whom are now performing internationally. In recent years the prizes have increased substantially. WMC now offers 6 annual scholarships totalling $11,500.
In September 2005, we were delighted to announce the creation of the WMC McLELLAN COMPETITION for Solo Performance with the WSO. The prize available for this competition is due to a very generous bequest by a late member who attended concerts for several years. This competition is open to advanced Manitoba musicians who are pursuing performance careers, in all disciplines including voice, and gives the winners the opportunity to perform with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. The first competition was held in the spring of 2006, and offered three prizes totalling $20,000, with a first prize of $10,000. Additional information for the next competition is available elsewhere on this web site. (Next WMC McLellan Competition)
The success of The Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg is due not only to the dedication and hard work of the women and men who have served on its board and on its advisory committee over the years, but also to the generous support received from subscribers, donors, patrons, sponsors, the media, and many other individuals and organizations who have helped in so many ways. We are grateful for the generosity, so freely given, which enables this organization to continue to build on the solid foundation of the past. (Support WMC)
