The 2018 WMC McLellan Competition for Solo Performance with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra was held April 15th, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the Jubilee Place Auditorium of MBCI, 180 Riverton Avenue, Wpg, MB. There were three finalists performing for a very appreciative audience! Wow! What an incredible afternoon!
Congratulations Andrea Lett – soprano
Winner of the 2018 WMC McLellan Competition
Andrea took home a cheque for $10,000
Praised for her “clear voice soaring to stratospheric heights” (Opera Canada), soprano Andrea Lett makes highly anticipated debuts in the 2018/19 season with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (Mozart Requiem), and Manitoba Opera (Zerlina in Don Giovanni), as well as returning to Saskatoon Opera for the role of Musetta in their MainStage production of La Boheme this coming summer.
Lett was recently engaged at San Francisco Opera as a principal cover (Ah Sing) for the world premiere of John Adams and Peter Sellars’ Girls of the Golden West. A 2017 Apprentice Artist for Santa Fe Opera, her roles have included Adele cover (Santa Fe Opera), Queen of the Night (Manitoba Underground Opera), Gretel (Saskatoon Opera School Tour), and Rose Maybud in Ruddigore (Winnipeg G&S society). Ms. Lett is a graduate of the Opera School at University of Toronto (M.Mus Opera) where she studied with soprano Mary Morrison and Holds a B.Mus Perf from the University of Manitoba with Monica Huisman.
In second place was David Liam Roberts – cello
David Liam took home a cheque for $6,000
David Liam Roberts has been described as a “prodigiously gifted young cellist who displays an artistic sensibility well beyond his tender years” (Winnipeg Free Press). A student of Yuri Hooker, prizes at national competition include the Canadian Music Competition and FCMF National Music Festival, in addition to scholarships and donors from Winnipeg competitions. This summer, David Liam will attend Morningside Music Bridge (MMB) in Warsaw, Poland. He was one of the only two Canadian cellists selected to take part in the program this summer, which will be his fourth attending MMB.
In third place was Jessica Kos-Whicher – soprano
Jessica took home a cheque for $4000
Winnipeg born soprano, Jessica Kos-Whicher has a Bachelor of Music degree and Post-Baccalaureate diploma in vocal performance, under the guidance of Tracy Dahl and Monica Huisman, at the University of Manitoba. Most recently she appeared as Lauretta in Manitoba Underground Opera’s production of Gianni Schicchi. Other recent highlights include: Tatiana in Opera NUOVA’s production of Eugene Oregon, Gordon Gerrard conducted, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Retold with Manitoba Underground Opera, Elle in Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine with Opera NUOVA and L’UniThéatre in Edmonton, AB and Sister Rose in Opera NUOVA’s production of Rose tin Opera NUOVA’s production of Dead Man Walking directed by Rosemary Thomson.

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Julian Pellicano!
The three finalists appeared with the WSO in the Final Competition and each gave a fabulous solo performance! Congratulations to each artist!
