PURPOSE
To provide career funding and performance opportunities to advanced young Manitoba musicians who are pursuing performance careers.

AWARDS
The funds available for the WMC McLellan Competition for Solo Performance with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (the Competition) is interest accumulated from an investment at the Winnipeg Foundation. Awards will be $20 000, divided among 3 Finalists and presented following the Final Round Concert. In addition to the awards, the three Finalists will also have the opportunity to rehearse and perform with the WSO.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must meet all of the following eligibility requirements to apply for the Competition:
*be a Manitoban. One who was raised/educated in Manitoba or has completed or is currently enrolled in a Degree Program (Undergraduate or Masters) in Manitoba. (Unique circumstances can be discussed.)
*be a Canadian citizen
*meet age requirements as of April 30th of the competition year as follows:
*Vocalists: 20 to 35 years
*Instrumentalists: 18 to 30 years
*not have been a previous first place winner of the WMC McLellan Competition. You may apply numerous times as long as age requirements are met.
*be performing at an advanced level.
*be aiming toward a classical music performance career.
*be available for the Semi-Final Round performance date of March 17, 2018 and the Final Round Concert date of April 15, 2018.
*be prepared to provide for their own travel expenses, accommodation and accompanist expenses for the entire audition process.
COMPETITION MODEL AND SELECTION PROCESS

This Biennial Competition is composed of Preliminary, Semi-Final and Final Rounds. Upon acceptance of the online application, the process is as follows:

Preliminary Round
All applicants will submit MP3s which will be coded for a blind audition. MP3s will be ranked by Jurors, who will choose the best performances. Twelve applicants will be chosen for the Semi-Final Round live auditions (not necessarily from each discipline). Semi-Finalists will be notified by the end of January.

Semi-Final Round
Date: Saturday, March 17th 2018
Place: Muriel Richardson Auditorium, WAG, 300 Memorial Blvd, Winnipeg, MB
Time: Each audition time will be posted at the WAG and on the WMC McLellan website
Admission: $10.00 Open to the public.
Twelve applicants will have a total of no more than 25 minutes each, to perform a variety of selections to display their talents. Order of performance at the Semi-Final audition will be random, except that there will be no vocal auditions before 11:00 am. We will try to accommodate those who have to drive into the city with an afternoon audition, and we may have to accommodate accompanists.

There will be rehearsal time in the Muriel Richardson Auditorium the day before the Competition Semi-Finals. There are no rehearsal rooms available the day of the competition.

Three sets of scores must be provided for the adjudicators and submitted upon arrival 30 minutes before an audition.

Adjudicators will assess the performances, provide written adjudications, and choose 3 Finalists to move forward to the Final Round. The Final Round contestants will be announced that evening, the Finalists contacted, and the results publicized. The recommendation of the Adjudicators is final and not subject to appeal.

The Semi-Final audition will be recorded on DVD and will be mailed with the individual adjudications to each of the contestants. There will be no recording except authorized by WMC.

Concert dress is recommended.

An audition program will be available for the audience. Family, friends and general public are welcome and may attend for any portion of the day. There will be no admittance during an audition.

Donations will be gratefully accepted to offset Competition expenses. Donations over $10 will receive a tax receipt.

Final Round with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra
Date: Sunday, April 15th, 2018
Place: Jubilee Place Auditorium of MBCI, 180 Riverton, Winnipeg, MB
Time: 2:00pm
Admission: Individual tickets available online or at the door: $30.00 (Adult) $5.00 (Students – at door only)  Tickets are also available within your 2017/2018 subscription series package, or call (204) 944-9431 to reserve your ticket!

The three Finalists will be introduced to the WSO Conductor, who will confer with each before the actual rehearsal and performance.

The three Finalists will rehearse for 40 minutes with the WSO and the Conductor in Residence. Each Finalist will be advised of the rehearsal schedule. Each Finalist will perform a Concerto or Vocal Program of no longer than 30 minutes at the evening Concert. The Finalists will perform in the order determined by the WSO Conductor.

For the final concert, all Finalists must arrive by 7:00 pm. Three sets of scores must be provided for the adjudicators. The Finalists must remain in the building during all performances.

A panel of Adjudicators will be present to determine the placement of the contestants. The recommendation of the Adjudicators is final and not subject to appeal.

Formal dress is recommended.

A reception will be held while the Adjudicators are deliberating.
The audience will reconvene in the auditorium for the results.
The awards will be presented on stage.
Photos of the presentation and a group photo will be taken.
The media will be informed of the results immediately following the concert.

During the final concert with the WSO, performances will be recorded by WMC for an archival video under contract with the Winnipeg Musician’s Association (WMA) – Local 190. A winner may apply to this Association prior to the Finals, and sign an individual contract for a copy of the video at a cost of $500. (Limited use of the recording is allowed.) There will be no recording except authorized by the WMA.

It is expected that winners will recognize the Competition by name in future biographies, giving WMC credit where possible, especially when performing in Manitoba.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Application Deadline
Closing date for applications: December 1st 2017. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
Reference letters may arrive by mail or email and need not be included with the application, but must arrive by the application deadline.
The completion of the application does not guarantee a live audition.
$125 application fee is due upon application deadline. (See Application Checklist – Section 6)

Application Checklist
You must first create a login username and password on the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg website – User account. You will need this login to complete the application and upload your audition MP3s.
Complete the online application form. Note that each portion of the application can be saved to allow editing at a later time.

Section 1
Name, date of birth, age, phone number and email address

Performance discipline and type.
Accompanist (if applicable)
Curriculum Vitae, including:
Educational training
Names of teachers and specific years with each
Previous scholarships or competitions
Professional and or performance experience (upload files of recital programs and press reviews if available – acceptable file types: pdf, doc, docs, pages, jpg, jpeg, png).

 

Section 4
A short bio of no more than 200 words, written in the third person, which will be used for a program should you be chosen as one of the Semi-Finalists. We reserve the right to edit bios to suit our purposes.
Statement of goals and plans for the awards.
Two letters of recommendation, one from a recent teacher or coach, and the other from someone, not a teacher or relative, who can corroborate your intention to continue with a musical performance career. (Upload files – acceptable file types: pdf, doc, docs, and pages).
Proof of age and citizenship (upload scanned image of birth certificate or passport – acceptable file types: pdf, doc, docs, pages, jpg, jpeg, png).
Publicity photo headshot (upload image – acceptable files types: jpg, jpeg, png) which will be used for the program should you be chosen as one of the Semi-Finalists

Section 5

Semi-Final Round

A list of your performance selections for the Semi-Final Round. with full titles of works, full Composer’s name and Composer’s dates with exact times and performance order.
Total audition performance time not to exceed 25 minutes.
Instrumentalists should play selections from 3 different historical periods.
Vocalists should include a variety of pieces in 3 different languages.
The Semi-Final audition selection may be repeated on the various rounds of the Competition. See “Final Round” for list of available WSO repertoire.
A letter of consent from the composer must accompany any photocopies of contemporary music. For original copies check out the website www.cdsheetmusic.com.

Final Round

A list of your performance selection(s) for the final performance with the WSO. Include Composer and Composer’s dates and full titles of works. Please choose from the available repertoire lists as follows: If you have other selections in mind, they must be approved by the WSO (prior to applying for the competition) and rental charges may apply. Any repertoire questions prior to application, will be referred to James Manishen or the conductor Julian Pellicano at the WSO.
Repertoire suggestions for:
Instrumental – Instrumentalists will prepare to play a full Concerto (30 min. max). The conductor will advise arranging a concerto to fit into this time frame.
Vocal –  selections with the WSO are available on our website. Vocalists may choose arias or other selections from the WSO list which are accompanied by a full orchestra. Selections should be in at least two languages. It is imperative that discussion has taken place with your teachers and the WSO before the repertoire is finalized for the application. Selections may have to be tailored to comply with the 30 minute performance time.
All concerti must be edited to fit into a 30 minute performance.
Section 6

Preliminary Round

Uploaded MP3 files for your Preliminary Round Auditions, which showcase the candidate’s particular talent, and provide an indication of the level of performance capability. Please do not include collaborative pieces. Solo works with or without accompaniment are best. The following is a list of submission requirements:
Maximum of 25 minutes in total length.
MP3s must be of good technical quality, with applause edited out and no other enhancements.
Files cannot be larger than 10 MB each. Limit of 5 files total.
MP3s must not include any reference to the identification of the performer. MP3s will be coded by the Competition for evaluation.
MP3 file names must identify Title, Composer and timing.
A non-refundable fee of $125 must be received by the application date. Payment can be made by e-transfer to wmcwinnipeg@outlook.com (Please include “WMC McLellan Competition” and your name in the note), by PayPal (a button will be provided after you successfully submit your application), or by mailing a cheque made payable to Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg and sent to The WMC McLellan Competition c/o Belle Meiklejohn, 1244 Wolseley Avenue.
